Our Weaner Moment
The elephant seal pups are without question a priceless thing to behold. Once weaned by their mother, they lay about the beach wondering when she is coming back. After about a month of waiting, the mounting hunger will eventually drive them to the sea. Once there, the vast majority of their diet consists of squid. As adults they are very deep divers, at times over 5,000 ft., and they can hold their breath for 1-2 hours!
Those recently weaned, scattered over the beach, are termed "weaners". They are adorable! And even more endearing are their big dark eyes and curious nature. We had been told that during any trip, each of us will probably have a "weaner-moment". Our moment was uniquely much more than a minute. The video of this experience has been removed, at the request of the South Georgia government. But with this photograph you may be able to imagine a truly remarkable experience between a human and a seal pup, who playfully fell in love with one another for a few moments, on a beach, in the remote South.
I'm in Heaven, and you are here too!
