Atlantis
We are now half way through our brief tours of four of the seven Canary Islands. These visits are only a glimpse. We've not gone to the beaches, seen the resorts, or been shopping. Nor have we explored the historical sites or fancy churches. We're also skipping the ancient historical cultures that are written about; for instance the aboriginal Guanches, the people that communicate through whistling, and the stories of a warrior race of women on La Palma which were eventually conquered by the Conquistadores. Rather, I've been dragging you all together, up to the mountain tops, seeking the natural wonders that Mother Nature has put on display. Not only are they Majestic, but if you listen really closely they may have something to say about times that extend far, far beyond recorded history.
The story of the lost continent of Atlantis first appeared in written form through Plato around the year 370 BC. That very detailed story suggested that a continent had been destroyed 10,000 years previously, and it was located in the Atlantic Ocean, near the Strait of Gibraltar. Since then there has been a tremendous amount of theoretical information published. But the important thing to remember is that they are all opinions and theories; no one "knows" with certainty because the time that we are referencing is well before recorded history. So I've read a bit, contemplated a bit, and I'll share with you some of the things that felt right to me. If this topic is of interest to you, please feel free to contribute. Remember there is no right or wrong! Isn't that nice?
Map of AtlantisAtlantis was a very big continent originally existing as one land mass, and then later as several big islands, for tens of thousands of years. That's a very long time. The location of this land stretched from the West coast of Africa, to the East coast of South America, including the Caribbean, and maybe as far north as Bermuda. The people that lived there were very advanced, both technologically and Spiritually. Crystals were a very important component of their lives. In part they were used to communicate with the Universe in the form of pyramids, for healing in domed temples, to generate energy, and more.
Atlantis was a wealthy, civilized and peaceful place. Their scientific advances included an understanding of genetic engineering. Over a great length of time developments in these areas led to a separation between societies, those that were purely benevolent, and another which became corrupted with greed, and power, loosing their connection to Spiritual ethics. In some ways we can draw a correlation to what occurred in Nazi Germany and their desires for an elite race. The subsequent disharmony between the two approaches eventually lead to the downfall of Atlantis. The great crystalline structures were destroyed and exploded with the power of nuclear bombs. There were earthquakes, and tsunami's for weeks inevitably destroying everything under a huge deluge of water.
Capital of AtlantisI remember as a child thinking that Atlantis was all about a civilization that lived under the ocean. Actually, Atlantis was an advanced civilization that ended up being destroyed and covered by water. Currently, all that remains above water from that time are it's highest summits... the islands of the Canaries, Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. The larger balance is covered by the sea, an ocean that takes its name from Atlantis: the Atlantic Ocean.
There are some that believe that Atlantis still lives, not only as a part of our history, but also our future. As we move forward as a global civilization, may it be that we make the best choices for each of us, with abiding respect for every life, and this our home, Earth.
