Volcan Masaya

Wed 4 August, 2010

How was your nap in the hammock? I know just how you feel; this island calls for slumber. I've found it very difficult to think, or make any sort of decision. Today we can take it easy and allow ourselves to acclimate to our new surroundings. Maybe a bit later we can try a short walk. Our lodge is on the slope of a dormant volcano, and the howler monkeys seem very close. Maybe we can spot a family of them as we make our way along that narrow jungle path... for now I'm drowsy, why don't you decide.

We are on the island of Ometepe, the largest island in the world that is contained within a freshwater lake. But most of that "size" is taken by two volcanos, joined by a bit of land, giving the entire region a figure 8 shape. The more feminine volcano is Maderas, dormant, and covered in jungle. She faces Volcan Concepcion, male in nature, and most assuredly active. His last rumble was as recent as 2007, discharging smoke and ash. Our temporary home on Maderas faces him, and he is a perfect cone of beauty. Considered to be the most exquisite volcano in Central America.

The island of Ometepe has been considered to be mystical by many ancient societies that have spent time here, beginning as early as 10,000 BC. A progression of indigenous groups followed one upon another, several leaving behind petroglyph carvings that are scattered about the island. Many of the early tribes came from Mexico, the Nahuas were most noted in the 9th and 10th centuries for bringing forth the idea that Ometepe was a sacred space. Pre-colonial Aztec descendants thought they'd found the Promised Lane. Even the Mayans spent some time here close to their period of extermination. Then came the Spanish Conquistadors, who overtook the island, introduced Christianity, and you have that very familiar story!

History aside, it is a very cool place. And there are a number of fun things to do here during our remaining time in Nicaragua. But for right now, lets eat, sleep, and gaze at the amazing view. There go a few parrots now, flying by in front of us. It seems that they like to fly in pairs. That reminds me of our night tour at Volcan Masaya two days ago, back on the mainland. Do you remember how you were frightened by the bats? Here's a little reminder:

Re: Volcan Masaya

The picture of Volcan Concepcion is, by far, my favorite of all the ones you have taken. Really cool!

Re: Volcan Masaya

Hey Lauren,  It is so incredible... and it catches you by surprise when you glance in it's direction. To me it looks like Mother Nature's Pyramid.

Re: Volcan Masaya

ahhh that nap was perfect. I sure do love my naps! If you were listening closely enough..that howler was yelling ," I got de coffee, I got de coffee". They are very wise creatures. and speaking of creatures..I might add that THAT place is where parrots belong (not to start anything with the parrot people out there).
and seriously..the Bat Cave Rocked!!!!!

Re: Volcan Masaya

the bats were creepy but cool, thanks for making us take that excursion. And was there ever a doubt that they were going to say no to letting us tag along on the night excursion.

Re: Volcan Masaya

You are right Joy, the lack of doubt was totally part of the fun. We just knew that we were going! Oddly enough the group we joined were high schoolers from the Pittsburgh area.
