Tradition

Tue 19 May, 2009

Yesterday was a celebration like I have never witnessed. It began early in the morning, and ended after midnight. Even though there are several foreign cultures which have made Norway their home, the original Norwegian bloodline is very deep. And those people are very, very proud of their heritage and their country. It's something that's hard to imagine as an average American that usually looks to another country, or many countries, for their deeper origins.

Celebrating National DayCelebrating National DayIt seemed that everyone was in Bergen. Spread all over the central part of town were masses of people. And they were wearing their finest clothing. Apparently there is a traditional attire for each small region of this country. A typical women's dress can cost roughly $5000. I can't say I saw the same ensemble twice. And they wore them ALL day. Even the men wore something traditional or a suit and tie. There was great pride in that... there was no changing at mid-day, and certainly no getting dirty or creased. It was an honor and a true celebration. Every age group was equally involved.

The word of the day was Tradition. The Parade lasted hours and snaked throughout the city.   The emphasis was on the people themselves, no fire trucks or advertisements. There was a carnival area, all of the restaurants were open and had special traditional menus, there were bands and dancing, and I'm sure you know how it ended! Can't we all appreciate having some sense of pride in either our origins, our country, our town, or even those extended family reunions?

Here is a very TINY excerpt of a very BIG day.

Re: Tradition

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! Especially loved the music and the dancing in your video. My mother played the organ in a Norwegian church in Philadelphia during WWII, and she was required to wear a traditional costume. I will tell you more about this when you are back in the U.S.

Re: Tradition

what a wonderful celebration! It almost makes me want to visit with Doahnshem! I can't believe the WHOLE military turned out in Bergen to march in the parade. did you feast on lutefisk and ligonberries? I'm still waiting for your description of that meal!

Re: Tradition

Hi Dear Ones,Believe me, I only captured a tiny bit on film.  It seemed that almost everyone was in the parade in some form or other.  And there had to be a gazillion people here.  Would you believe they had every scrap or tiny piece of paper cleaned up by the next morning? The lutefisk is coming... but I'm very... trepidatious Wink

Re: Tradition

WOW..the video is awesome..puts us right there! What fun! Did we climb up a tree for that entrance view??

Re: Tradition

So much fun!! Loved the dancing! And all nationalities were represented in the parade - how amazing!

Re: Tradition

Fireworks? Really? Wow, we've never had that in Tromsø on the 17th of May... uhm... yeah, well, that's probably because it's so bright here at that time, just four days before the Sun decides not to set for a while Wink

Still, I had no idea cities further to the South used to have fireworks! I'm learning!
