Ready. Set. GO!
Oh that is nice! My head snuggled into the fleece-covered neck pillow only moments after my body had wiggled into the cramped, but sufficient, window seat. Glancing around, it was pretty clear that this was going to be a full flight. I smiled even wider when there were no children in sight. I love kids, don’t get me wrong, but on a long flight it is better for our sanities sake if the screamers and criers are on a different jet. Only moments into this boarding, and it was evident that this leg of our South American journey was going to be blissfully quiet.
I glanced at the seat next to me. Of course you were there, and I had to chuckle at your faux leopard skin neck pillow. You’d also started in on the snacks you had stored in your carry-on; and while munching you were quickly scanning the movie selections on the mini-screen placed only two feet from your beautiful face. It really is amazing how modern technology can provide a hundred or more options, Cinema-on-demand, embedded in the seat before you. Clearly we had done this flying-thing before, and even though we were in coach, we managed to quickly create a sense of home in a space the size of a bird’s nest.
Finally we were on our way. For those of you that understand the game of baseball, the past two weeks had felt like I was trying to achieve an "in the park" home-run. Rounding the bases of my life, running as fast as my legs could carry me, I was becoming increasingly breathless as I made the turn for home plate. My work schedule had given me no time to catch any surplus air. But sure enough, the third base coach had waved me through, and when I finally slid into home plate, safe and sound, there was a big cloud of dust and a cheer from the crowd. Home run, we made it, and were on the plane! Wouldn’t you agree that a seven and a half hour direct flight to Lima, Peru is the perfect way to catch our breath?
Lima (pronounced Lee-ma), a name which makes me think of the bean, is the capital of Peru. By the time we land it will be dark. What a relief to know that someone will be picking us up, and taking us to our hotel for the next two nights. Our time in Lima will be brief, so get some rest tonight because the fun begins bright and early tomorrow morning! “What’s the plan?” you say... Well, it would seem that my eyes are closed and I’m pretending to doze...
